The Beatles Are Getting Back On August 27, 2021

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

Sneak peek at Peter Jackson's "Let It Be" Reboot - The Beatles: Get Back

For the past year, famed director Peter Jackson has been working on a reboot of the long out of print Beatles "Let It Be" documentary. With over 60 hours of footage at his disposal [shot by the original "Let It Be" director Michale Lindsay-Hogg] Jackson is half way done at creating an entirely new cut of which will be called "The Beatles: Get Back". For Beatles purists out there, have no fear...Jackson is also restoring the footage of the original cut with both films coming out in August of 2021 (in theaters and on Disney+)

The original film was shot on 16mm footage because it stared off as a TV special. This explains the muddiness of the often bootlegged videos which you see on YouTube. Even the official footage which was released on laser disc many years ago is not that great. But Peter Jackson has great experience restoring low quality video and making it look pristine. His technical achievements on the 2018 documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old" were groundbreaking and you can see from the four minute teaser footage that was released today that we will be seeing a different "Let It Be" than we have ever seen before.

Jackson said, “We wanted to give the fans of The Beatles all over the world a holiday treat, so we put together this five-minute sneak peek at our upcoming theatrical film ‘The Beatles: Get Back.’ We hope it will bring a smile to everyone’s faces and some much-needed joy at this difficult time.”

FROM THE BEATLES' WEBSITE

Acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson’s “The Beatles: Get Back” is a unique cinematic experience that takes audiences back in time to The Beatles’ intimate recording sessions during a pivotal moment in music history. The film showcases the warmth, camaraderie and creative genius that defined the legacy of the iconic foursome. Shot in January 1969 and compiled from over 60 hours of unseen footage and more than 150 hours of unheard audio, all of which has been brilliantly restored, “The Beatles: Get Back” is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years and charts the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album. The film features – for the first time in its entirety – The Beatles' last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.
