Today is the last day of Hanukah/Chanukah so let's cap it off with some music and comedy courtesy of SNL to celebrate with our Jewish friends and family! By the way, if you're curious as to which is the proper spelling of Hanukah/Chanukah, it appears to be a tie (according to Time magazine.) You can read more about that here.
CHRISTMASTIME IS FOR THE JEWS
Here's a fun claymation video done by the brilliant Robert Smigel for SNL. The claymation style is an homage to Saul and Bass who created the classic 1964 "Rudolph The Reindeer" special and the music performance is by none other than Darlene Love who sang the classic "Christmas Baby Please Come Home."
THE CHANUKAH SONG BY ADAM SANDLER
Some say that "The Chanukah Song" is the "White Christmas" of the this Jewish holiday. It was written by comedian Adam Sandler with Saturday Night Live writers Lewis Morton and Ian Maxtone-Graham and originally performed by Sandler on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update on December 3, 1994. Sandler subsequently performed the song as part of his stand-up act, later updating it with new lyrics. All variations center on the theme of Jewish children feeling alienated during the Christmas season, and Sandler's listing of Jewish celebrities (with both real and fictional connections to Judaism) as a way of sympathizing with their situation.
IT'S HANUKAH HARRY!
Some say that Hanukah Harry is their Santa Claus. Created by Jon Lovitz, Hanukkah Harry's first appearance on SNL was on Season 15: Episode 9, a show first broadcast on December 16, 1989, with guest host Andie MacDowell, in a sketch titled "The Night Hanukkah Harry Saved Christmas",.
JACOB THE BAR MITVAH BOY ON HANUKAH TRADITIONS
Jacob The Bar Mitzvah Boy was created by the very talented Vanessa Bayer. Jacob would appear regularly on Weekend Update to perform a rehearsed speech (complete with forced jokes) about a given subject..in this video Jacob talks about the Hanukah tradition.
